In the international photo competition for nature photography Asferico Carsten Egevang has been awarded "highly commended" in the category "Man and Nature".
The image "Walrus hunter" is shot north of Qaanaaq. When you catch walrus in these parts you always harpoon the animal, so it doesn’t sink and is lost! The winning picture from the summer of 2013, and taken under biological fieldwork. Here is the hunter's harpoon - tip replaced with a satellite transmitter that attaches itself to the large animals, and then tells the scientists about animal migrations. In this way, local skills built up over generations, and "high- tech " and "low- tech " equipment combined neatly.
